Update from The Revival Centre May 2020

Update from The Revival Centre Matugga May 2020

Uganda’s lock down was extended for a further two weeks from 19th May and now anyone making an essential journey has to wear a government approved facemask.
We speak to Ivan and Allen each week to get news and then plan what support is possible. Revival Centre joined in with an inter faith community humanitarian initiative to provide food for households who were starving. GACAH sent a donation towards that which went into the general pool together raised by other groups. Enough food was purchased and distributed by the army and Red Cross to reach 2,500 needy families in Matugga.
Ivan reports that generally the community is ‘surviving’ but as around the world, people are fearful of the virus itself and they have many fears and anxieties for the future. Everyone is anticipating huge increases in the price of food and transportation which is causing considerable concern, as is the fear of the inevitable increase in unemployment.

Revival Centre, along with other schools, have been asked to prepare for the return of just three classes on June 8th, those classes are the ones that are eligible to sit exams within this academic year – Primary 7, Senior 4 and Senior 6.  The Government has issued guidelines for the schools re-opening but there is no financial support toward these requirements.  All rooms must be cleaned and fumigated and staff and students must have robust social distancing measures in place. All must wear face masks and health is to be monitored with temperature guns. GACAH are sending funds to cover these items together with the usual monthly gift, which must now cover the provision of food for all the children whether champions or not.  As usual we will also pay for the costs required by the government to register all the Champions who are sitting the state exams.

The Further Education institutions currently remain closed but we shall be sending money to meet the accommodation costs of our university students in order to retain their accommodation ready for their eventual return to study.

Please keep All those in Matugga in your heart and thoughts, Ivan as he ministers to his people and the partnership team as they consider what the financial impact from the pandemic might be.

We will send further news on a regular basis.

Coronavirus doesn’t stop our supporters fundraising!

A month ago the Basham family took part in the 2.6 Challenge to raise some funds for The Revival Centre. The 2.6 challenge is a physical challenge aimed at supporting all charities. The Bashams set themselves the following tasks:
  • Dad – 2.6 km run
  • Mum – 26 minutes hula hooping
  • Hope – 26 hide and seeks
  • Joy – 26 minutes trampolining
  • Judah – 26 star jumps
  • Iva – 26 slides
Lawrence said “We obviously had a great day and were all exhausted by the evening, Jem has been struggling with a hula related issue today! The best news is we think we’ve raised somewhere close to £1400 for the Ivan and the team at Revival, although this is less than anticipated income from the cancelled (Trail) race it is still fantastic and a great relief to know the community there are still being supported. Much love Lawrence, Jemma, Hope, Joy, Judah and Iva xxxx

A HUGE thank you to the Bashams for their amazing efforts and the funds raised, some of which have gone towards the posho and beans bought for the Matugga community.
If you would like to donate towards this humanitarian initiative or for emergency funds for Revival, the fund-raising page is still open along with the normal GACAH Virgin Giving page and all funds will go to helping the Revival Centre and those most in need in Matugga.

Update from The Revival Centre April 2020

Update from The Revival Centre Matugga

Greetings and thank you to all our loyal supporters. We hope that you are all keeping safe and well. Your continued support is highly valued, no more so than in these uncertain times.

Like many countries, Uganda is now facing big restrictions to try and slow down the spread of Covid-19 with the first cases being reported just over 2 weeks ago.

On Friday March 20th the Ugandan Government compulsorily closed all schools and universities for an initial period of 30 days, this was shortly followed by churches and meeting places. Travel restrictions and ‘lockdown’ measures have also been introduced.

On Monday 22nd March all the children and staff had left Revival Centre and returned to their homes, apart from those who live on site and 7 or 8 champions who have no safe home environment.  Ivan and Allen have again generously opened up their home to these champions with another staying with one of the school matrons.

We were fortunately able to send our monthly gift out just before lock down was initiated, so Ivan was able to pay most of the staff before they went home.

On Monday 6th April we managed to send more money to pay the remaining staff and to buy food for the students who are being cared for by Ivan and Allen.

We will keep you up to date with further news as we hear more.

Please be advised the plans for the June visit have been cancelled along with any fund raising events planned for the next few months.

The GACAH team really value your support and prayers for the children and staff at Revival during these difficult times.

Debbie Walker and Martin Smith
On behalf of the GACAH trustees

Revival News February 2020

View this email in your browser

The Revival Centre enters its 20th year!

The Revival Centre celebrates its 20th year in 2020!

As we go into the 20th year of the beginnings of The Revival Centre we want to share some recent news from the Centre as well as let you know about the exciting celebrations we are planning when Bishop Ivan visits us this year. Keep reading until the end to find out more…..

The Champions
At Revival Schools the new school year is just getting underway. Coinciding with this, Madam Allen tells us that the national exam results from the previous year are beginning to be released. The first results for the pupils in their final year at Revival Primary school are in with 8 first grades and 27 second grades, no third grades and no failures! Madam Allen says
“We are grateful unto God for helping these children. All other odds were beaten to put up such a performance”
We are now waiting for the Examination body to release the Senior 4 (equivalent of our GCSEs) and Senior 6 results (equivalent of our A levels). We will keep you posted! As Madam Allen recently said
We cannot boast about this, if it had not been for your support in all areas of running the school. We are grateful for every support (spiritual, moral and financial)”.

Revival Church – Moves
Revival Church is at the heart of Ivan’s ministry in Matugga, and in June Ivan shared with us his need for help. The church meets in shared premises with the Primary school
, but due to new regulations the church needs to have its own site separate from the schoolIn September the farm at Nagaseke was sold and the proceeds enabled us to purchase a piece of land near to the entrance gate to Revival Centre, and the church are in the process of raising funds to put up a new building for church use only. GACAH would be delighted to be a conduit for any supporters who would like to help Ivan build his church. Please send us an email for more information. (giveachildahope@gmail.com)

Gombe Farm
Gombe Farm has experienced challenging times recently. In October, sadly all the chickens were stolen just as they were ready for market. They have been replaced, but the cost of this coupled with the rising cost of feed due to inflation means that the farm is struggling to meet its costs. The aim of the farm project is to help Revival become more sustainable and it has been funded by a group of supporters over the last two years. We can only hope that with hard work and continued support, the farm will recover from this set back.

EFOD – Progress on the new Maize Mill construction by Engineers for Overseas Development (EFOD)
In 2016 when the trustees visited the site, the field contained dense vegetation, was very steep and the sloping land ended in a ditch close to the main road.  EFOD accepted the challenge of preparing a culvert, then clearing the land and setting foundations for the new grain mill.
In 2019 the first engineers from EFOD led by Zak Raja (West Midlands branch) arrived at the site to begin the work.  In 2020 the engineers will be
back with the ambition of completing the build of the mill and handing over the whole site to Bishop Ivan for active service at the end of the summer.

2020 – is the 20th anniversary of The Revival Centre!
This year marks Ivan’s 20th visit to us – we have much to be thankful for and we are making plans to mark this with a special event during the June visit. We will be sending out an invite to a party in June, details will follow soon.
Leading up to that we would love to hear from you (giveachildahope@gmail.comwith any ideas that you might have – celebratory or fund raising – we want to be able to raise the funds required to finish the new secondary school block; desks, computers, teaching aids etc. to mark this milestone in our partnership with Ivan and all at Revival Centre.

News from the Revival Centre straight from the desk of Madam Allen Ssekindi Champions Coordinator and Co-Director of Revival Centre.

Revival Updates

Bishop Ivan made his annual trip to the United Kingdom and a lot of blessings have been realised. Among which are: a consignment of text books and a television for the class room which is being shipped over; funds for the nursery toilet; funds for our two additional champions to go on into further education; and the school links strengthened through classroom exchange.

The Champions
When we first started the champions’ programme, we weren’t sure of what the results would be or even what to expect. We knew that we wanted to save as many of these suffering children as possible, but beyond that we weren’t sure of the course God had planned for us, or how and where the funds would come from. We were overjoyed when so many of you felt the same way. The struggles of suffering children touched your hearts and you just knew, like us, that you had to do something to stop it. Together we have done just that! We have taken children off the streets, some out of the dumps and garbage bins and have literally saved their precious lives. Thank you! Without your compassionate heart and generous gifts, none of this would have happened and these children would have simply perished! It should be noted that all support given not only benefit these children but it benefits the entire community.

I am happy to report that Revival Centre has continued to care for around 150 underprivileged children by providing breakfast tea and two hot meals a day, quality education, accommodation, recreation facilities, sanitation, hygiene and health care with medical experts for the boys and girls.

The help is given to children studying at any level from kindergarten to senior six with additional support given to the best student each year to study for higher education. A good number of students have benefited from this scheme. These children are loving, kind, generous and compassionate people who are aware and tremendously thankful to you for your investment in their lives.

Further Education Students

While they are starting their new semesters, each of them has performed very well and we have registered no retakes.
My recent chat with Gitta James indicated that all is well and in three semesters he becomes a medical doctor. He is forever grateful for all the support rendered to him, without which he would be out on the streets and not realising his dreams. He mentioned that he is proud to have gone through Revival Centre. Looking at his personality, humility and conduct, many people enquire about his school and he has always told these people that Revival has made him what he is toda
y.
James says ” I am so grateful that I am soon completing my dream course of becoming a medical doctor.” ( going on to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology) “I want to help mothers who die of preventable deaths in my country” . He continues “thank you always for supporting me and making sure my dream comes true”.

Ketra now in second year and smiling thanks to GACAH
Agnes thought she was dreaming when she received her tuition

Nakato Rebecca is in her third year now is doing well just like Ketra who is in her second year. They both feel so privileged to have the opportunity of being sponsored at that level.

Agnes is the lucky student who joined the programme having been the best Champion Student in her year of study. Agnes wanted to study Journalism, we are grateful for the charity support, which has enabled this young, underprivileged girl to achieve her goal. Her grandmother found the news so exciting that she could not help crying tears of joy.

Nakabanda Rebecca has enrolled for an in-service course on a Bachelor of Arts in Education, where she will be studying while the schools are in holidays. She will have a residential training for three weeks and will break off for as long as term time is still on.

Kusasira Stuart is doing a course in Graphics and Design. We have managed to get him a second hand laptop to help his studying. He will be looking for contracts, where his instructor will help him, so as to be able to earn as he pays the rest of the tuition.

Ddumba Gideon completed his three year course and is now waiting for his results. He is also trying to find a job in Business management.

Vocational Training

When we started a vocational centre in 2014, it was due to the realisation that some of our children were not academically inclined, but with some help they could realise their full potential and profit their various communities with vocational skills.
However, the programme failed because of budget constraints. We are now coming back with an idea of reintroducing the scheme, but with new methods.
The new kind of program is being borrowed from the in-service training, which Nakabanda is going to attend. Training is mainly during holidays when term time has closed. The duration is between three weeks to four weeks.

The Schools

During the previous term a lot of activity was going on amidst learning, we ran a school-based chicken project for the children in Primary school where 100 birds were brooded. They were prepared very well and the children and the teachers were able to have a special meal this term.

The primary school also had an Edible Garden Project, intended to be for study purposes and also to produce high quality, vitamin-rich foods. According to the class teacher, gardening is educational and develops new skills including:
Responsibility– caring for plants.
Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown.
Physical activity – doing something fun and productive.
Cooperation – including shared play activity and teamwork.
Creativity – finding new and exciting ways to grow food.
Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from developing a love of nature.

They set up a small vegetable garden on the existing premises. They have mainly grown tomatoes and some leafy vegetables. The yields were great and the tomatoes were enjoyed by the entire school community.

Overall, we have reached many milestones and the children are in a better place thanks to the partnership between GACAH, our many supporters and Revival Centre.
As a ministry we are grateful to all the helping hands.
