The Revival Centre enters its 20th year!

The Revival Centre celebrates its 20th year in 2020!

As we go into the 20th year of the beginnings of The Revival Centre we want to share some recent news from the Centre as well as let you know about the exciting celebrations we are planning when Bishop Ivan visits us this year. Keep reading until the end to find out more…..

The Champions
At Revival Schools the new school year is just getting underway. Coinciding with this, Madam Allen tells us that the national exam results from the previous year are beginning to be released. The first results for the pupils in their final year at Revival Primary school are in with 8 first grades and 27 second grades, no third grades and no failures! Madam Allen says
“We are grateful unto God for helping these children. All other odds were beaten to put up such a performance”
We are now waiting for the Examination body to release the Senior 4 (equivalent of our GCSEs) and Senior 6 results (equivalent of our A levels). We will keep you posted! As Madam Allen recently said
We cannot boast about this, if it had not been for your support in all areas of running the school. We are grateful for every support (spiritual, moral and financial)”.

Revival Church – Moves
Revival Church is at the heart of Ivan’s ministry in Matugga, and in June Ivan shared with us his need for help. The church meets in shared premises with the Primary school
, but due to new regulations the church needs to have its own site separate from the schoolIn September the farm at Nagaseke was sold and the proceeds enabled us to purchase a piece of land near to the entrance gate to Revival Centre, and the church are in the process of raising funds to put up a new building for church use only. GACAH would be delighted to be a conduit for any supporters who would like to help Ivan build his church. Please send us an email for more information. (giveachildahope@gmail.com)

Gombe Farm
Gombe Farm has experienced challenging times recently. In October, sadly all the chickens were stolen just as they were ready for market. They have been replaced, but the cost of this coupled with the rising cost of feed due to inflation means that the farm is struggling to meet its costs. The aim of the farm project is to help Revival become more sustainable and it has been funded by a group of supporters over the last two years. We can only hope that with hard work and continued support, the farm will recover from this set back.

EFOD – Progress on the new Maize Mill construction by Engineers for Overseas Development (EFOD)
In 2016 when the trustees visited the site, the field contained dense vegetation, was very steep and the sloping land ended in a ditch close to the main road.  EFOD accepted the challenge of preparing a culvert, then clearing the land and setting foundations for the new grain mill.
In 2019 the first engineers from EFOD led by Zak Raja (West Midlands branch) arrived at the site to begin the work.  In 2020 the engineers will be
back with the ambition of completing the build of the mill and handing over the whole site to Bishop Ivan for active service at the end of the summer.

2020 – is the 20th anniversary of The Revival Centre!
This year marks Ivan’s 20th visit to us – we have much to be thankful for and we are making plans to mark this with a special event during the June visit. We will be sending out an invite to a party in June, details will follow soon.
Leading up to that we would love to hear from you (giveachildahope@gmail.comwith any ideas that you might have – celebratory or fund raising – we want to be able to raise the funds required to finish the new secondary school block; desks, computers, teaching aids etc. to mark this milestone in our partnership with Ivan and all at Revival Centre.

News from the Revival Centre straight from the desk of Madam Allen Ssekindi Champions Coordinator and Co-Director of Revival Centre.

Revival Updates

Bishop Ivan made his annual trip to the United Kingdom and a lot of blessings have been realised. Among which are: a consignment of text books and a television for the class room which is being shipped over; funds for the nursery toilet; funds for our two additional champions to go on into further education; and the school links strengthened through classroom exchange.

The Champions
When we first started the champions’ programme, we weren’t sure of what the results would be or even what to expect. We knew that we wanted to save as many of these suffering children as possible, but beyond that we weren’t sure of the course God had planned for us, or how and where the funds would come from. We were overjoyed when so many of you felt the same way. The struggles of suffering children touched your hearts and you just knew, like us, that you had to do something to stop it. Together we have done just that! We have taken children off the streets, some out of the dumps and garbage bins and have literally saved their precious lives. Thank you! Without your compassionate heart and generous gifts, none of this would have happened and these children would have simply perished! It should be noted that all support given not only benefit these children but it benefits the entire community.

I am happy to report that Revival Centre has continued to care for around 150 underprivileged children by providing breakfast tea and two hot meals a day, quality education, accommodation, recreation facilities, sanitation, hygiene and health care with medical experts for the boys and girls.

The help is given to children studying at any level from kindergarten to senior six with additional support given to the best student each year to study for higher education. A good number of students have benefited from this scheme. These children are loving, kind, generous and compassionate people who are aware and tremendously thankful to you for your investment in their lives.

Further Education Students

While they are starting their new semesters, each of them has performed very well and we have registered no retakes.
My recent chat with Gitta James indicated that all is well and in three semesters he becomes a medical doctor. He is forever grateful for all the support rendered to him, without which he would be out on the streets and not realising his dreams. He mentioned that he is proud to have gone through Revival Centre. Looking at his personality, humility and conduct, many people enquire about his school and he has always told these people that Revival has made him what he is toda
y.
James says ” I am so grateful that I am soon completing my dream course of becoming a medical doctor.” ( going on to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology) “I want to help mothers who die of preventable deaths in my country” . He continues “thank you always for supporting me and making sure my dream comes true”.

Ketra now in second year and smiling thanks to GACAH
Agnes thought she was dreaming when she received her tuition

Nakato Rebecca is in her third year now is doing well just like Ketra who is in her second year. They both feel so privileged to have the opportunity of being sponsored at that level.

Agnes is the lucky student who joined the programme having been the best Champion Student in her year of study. Agnes wanted to study Journalism, we are grateful for the charity support, which has enabled this young, underprivileged girl to achieve her goal. Her grandmother found the news so exciting that she could not help crying tears of joy.

Nakabanda Rebecca has enrolled for an in-service course on a Bachelor of Arts in Education, where she will be studying while the schools are in holidays. She will have a residential training for three weeks and will break off for as long as term time is still on.

Kusasira Stuart is doing a course in Graphics and Design. We have managed to get him a second hand laptop to help his studying. He will be looking for contracts, where his instructor will help him, so as to be able to earn as he pays the rest of the tuition.

Ddumba Gideon completed his three year course and is now waiting for his results. He is also trying to find a job in Business management.

Vocational Training

When we started a vocational centre in 2014, it was due to the realisation that some of our children were not academically inclined, but with some help they could realise their full potential and profit their various communities with vocational skills.
However, the programme failed because of budget constraints. We are now coming back with an idea of reintroducing the scheme, but with new methods.
The new kind of program is being borrowed from the in-service training, which Nakabanda is going to attend. Training is mainly during holidays when term time has closed. The duration is between three weeks to four weeks.

The Schools

During the previous term a lot of activity was going on amidst learning, we ran a school-based chicken project for the children in Primary school where 100 birds were brooded. They were prepared very well and the children and the teachers were able to have a special meal this term.

The primary school also had an Edible Garden Project, intended to be for study purposes and also to produce high quality, vitamin-rich foods. According to the class teacher, gardening is educational and develops new skills including:
Responsibility– caring for plants.
Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown.
Physical activity – doing something fun and productive.
Cooperation – including shared play activity and teamwork.
Creativity – finding new and exciting ways to grow food.
Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from developing a love of nature.

They set up a small vegetable garden on the existing premises. They have mainly grown tomatoes and some leafy vegetables. The yields were great and the tomatoes were enjoyed by the entire school community.

Overall, we have reached many milestones and the children are in a better place thanks to the partnership between GACAH, our many supporters and Revival Centre.
As a ministry we are grateful to all the helping hands.

Ivan’s visit to the UK in June 2019

Bishop Ivan visiting Ilkley Grammar School
School Visits and more Class Twinning Projects exchanged.

This year has been another busy and successful visit, particularly with our supporter schools.

The new programme of the Schools Class Twinning project saw the first exchange of themed projects between four classes in the Revival Primary School and one class from Revival Grammar School and four local primary school classes and one local grammar school class. The standard of work that was exchanged was really excellent and the children were thrilled to receive them.

Bishop Ivan visiting Bankfoot Congregation
Visiting the Brotherton Library

A big part of the visit involves Bishop Ivan sharing with the trustees about the current challenges and opportunities faced by The Revival Centre, and out of this we make a Partnership Plan for the year ahead. On the last Saturday of the visit Bishop Ivan and the trustees went to Scargill House Retreat Centre at Kettlewell for a time of reflection and prayer around these plans.

The Partnership Plan for 2019/20

Site issues
Funds are needed for:
  • A new toilet for the newly relocated nursery.
  • Repairs to the generator and old solar panels.
  • A fence around the newly constructed sports field and some sports equipment.
  • (And then THE BIG ONE)  which is to COMPLETE THE SECONDARY CLASSROOM BLOCK.
A plan was also approved for the Revival Church to move to the top of the site; this will free up additional space for the Primary School and removes any Safeguarding concerns that the council may have had, and importantly gives the church an opportunity to grow and better reach out into the community.

Scholarship Fund.

This fund was launched two years ago and this year marks the third year we have been able to award the scholarship to a young adult so they can engage in university based learning. The A Level standards have risen across the board as champions reach for the prize of a University place. We are now also looking at ways to help others who are less academically minded, when they leave school. We are exploring options such as apprenticeships, vocational courses, or ‘start up grants. The cost of these is around £300 per year compared to £1800 for a university place.

Champions support programme

We are always in discussion with Bishop Ivan and Madam Allen to identify areas where there is room for improvement and the costs of these: this year we are focusing on welfare needs such as diet and educational content through looking at how we can support the teachers with teaching aids and training courses.

Sustainability

We are working hard with Madam Allen on the investment provided for Gombe farm to make it self-sustaining and then bring in extra income locally for Revival Centre.
The gift of a Maize Mill by the charity EFOD is underway and should be on stream in 2020 and this will then bring in an income. Revival Centre has a plan to attract more ‘fee paying’ students to increase their income.

GACAH needs more supporters / income

• Do you have any community, school or church contacts that we might reach out to?
• Could you a) increase your gift to GACAH by 10% to help keep up with inflation?
Or b) consider a ‘one off gift’ towards one of our projects, the classroom block or the scholarship fund
Or c) bring some skills to help the Trustees?

Lastly none of this would have been possible without your help so a big

Thank You

News from the Revival Centre from the desk of Madam Allen Ssekindi Champions Coordinator and Director of Revival Centre

Children’s Act Conference

On the 17th of July 2018, Derek, one of our very own champions at Revival, beat all the odds to join a prestigious meeting in Kampala’s Golf Hotel.
The Uganda Human Rights Commission in conjunction with United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) launched the findings on the compatibility of Ugandan Legislation with the convention on the rights of the Ugandan Child. This was an extremely important gathering in a prestigious Hotel where Ministers, Members of Parliament, the international community and other Non-governmental organisations, among others, met to discuss the findings of the Report.
Derek who has recently joined Senior 1 Class was chosen to discuss the plight of children in Uganda. In his submission, Derek thanked Revival Centre for supporting the vulnerable children in Uganda without whose support many hundreds of children would never have attained any education. He advised the congregation to always help those who are in need, as well as people with disability.
After all the presentations and discussions, Derek signed the newly launched report. He did this on behalf of Ugandan Children as a way of affirming that findings of the report are a true representation of the current situation on the rights of children in Uganda. This was a wonderful moment seeing a Champion standing shoulder to shoulder with so many important people in this country to support the launch.

The Panelists: Derek( L), Dr. Zahara (M)  from the School of Law, Makerere University  and Mr. Mujuni (R) From Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development

Note from the Trustees

After the conference the Revival Centre felt it was appropriate to reiterate the importance of child safeguarding at the Centre. The Directors of the Revival Centre have given clear instructions to the teachers, and both teachers and parents have now received direct briefings on the requirements of the new law by the Ugandan Human Rights Commission.
Within Uganda, the Revival Centre is seen as a front-runner in implementing the new law.

Revival Grammar Gets a face lift

When you visit Revival Grammar School today you may think you are somewhere else and not in Matugga. The school has been painted with white and black squares just like the new ‘O’ level Uniform. The new block looks really smart. As you enter the gate there is a welcome note which tells you where you are “Revival Group of Schools”. When the gate is rolled way, your eyes will  not miss the nice patterns on the new block. You will not miss the beautiful flower garden. It is our New Look!
The walk way has gravel layers of stones to protect the students from the mud which is churned up when it rains. This has not only excited the student community but it is likely to attract more students. We are forever grateful to our partners in the UK for the partnership and support.

Revival schools new Mini bus

The Revival Centre has recently acquired a bus to pick up and drop off the day scholars to and from school. This was acquired after making a good exchange with the school’s old van. The owner of the bus expects the Revival Centre pay for the bus over a period of three terms. (one installment per term) The bus which was driven through the gates of Revival Centre already branded, brought a lot of joy and excitement to the children. It is not a new Bus but it is believed that it will serve the purpose for which it was acquired. In addition to the daily bus run for scholars, the bus will also take students for educational tours and trips rather than having to hire mini buses or taxis for the purpose.

Our “new” school bus!

Revival goes Solar

A new Solar Panel has been installed thanks to Mrs Crossley, head of Moorfield School, Ilkley. On her retirement the staff presented her with a gift to be used in Matugga, a project she has supported for many years. Additional money was raised by the staff and pupils at a number of school events. This gift has enabled us to purchase a ‘double panel’ installation which has been put on the new secondary classroom block. “This time we shall pass highly” (they mean passing their exams) some of the boys were heard saying. You should have seen the excitement from the Boys dormitory when the solar lights in the Senior 1 and Senior 5 – Senior 6 dormitories were switched on. A security light has been installed to cater for the extra dormitory which did not benefit from the solar installation.
A big thank you to Moorfield School for this wonderful gift.
