The Revival Centre in Matugga, Uganda

Revival Primary

The primary school was the first part of the Revival Centre to be established. The first block was constructed in 2001 and provided for 30 children. Today the school provides for 450 children through P1 to P7 when the Universal Primary Certificate exam is taken.

Class sizes range between 50 and 70 pupils. There is a wide age range within each class because many children have missed some years of education, so they start in the class that reflects their ability rather than their age.

The vast majority of children attending the primary school are day pupils from the local community, in addition there are around 60 primary age boarders and a number of primary age champions.

Getting an education is seen as the main route out of poverty and many families strive very hard to pay for their children to attend school. This is a big sacrifice because many families need their children to work to help the family make a living. Accordingly, children take their education very seriously and work hard. They are educated in English from day one which makes it possible for us to send text books donated by schools in the UK.

Recent blessings include the establishment of a primary computer room and some boxes of text books. The computers and books were part of a larger consignment shipped from the UK in a 40' container which arrived in late February 2009.

Current Needs

The classrooms are dark and of rough construction and the walls and floors need resurfacing and painting to brighten them up. Blackboards are needed along with more classroom furniture so that each child can sit at a desk. Stationery and teaching materials are a constant need.

There is a need for a new girls toilet block as the old pit latrines are full and give out a stench and now pose a health risk.

Next to the computer room space has been set aside for a primary library/reading room and funds are needed to buy wood to have bookshelves made.

The primary school playground equipment is in constant need of repair and periodic replacement.
